Statelessness

We tackle statelessness and information gaps as the severe lack of official data and documentation that leaves populations without a nationality, making them highly vulnerable to exploitation. We research how information disorder worsens statelessness, as marginalised groups get erased from both digital and physical records. Without documentation, they cannot prove their identity, making them easy targets for labour trafficking and online deception. The UN refugee agency identifies statelessness as a root cause of extreme vulnerability, heavily compounded by misinformation about registration processes. We tackle this issue through targeted advocacy and community engagement. We work on the ground to understand exactly why stateless populations fall through into digital voicelessness. We then advise governments on the safe use of digital tools to register undocumented populations. This ensures solutions to statelessness do not accidentally expose these vulnerable groups to new forms of digital surveillance or scam operations.
